Org. Setting and Reporting
The envisioned start date for the internship is late August/early September 2017. The duration is a minimum of three months with the potential for an extension. The intern will work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Section. The internship is unpaid and full-time.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, the Intern will carry out the following duties:
- Assist the Section in expanding the pool of potential candidates for senior leadership positions in the field, with a particular focus on identifying strong women candidates. This includes supporting follow-up work on the recently concluded Global Call for nominations, which will entail collecting data and lessons learned; providing support to outreach to nominees; and other administrative support.
- Support regular outreach activities, including the preparation of presentations for meetings with UN entities, Member States and regional organizations;
- Update, review and refine profiles of potential candidates included in LEAD (the senior leadership database) through the use of open sources. LEAD is the section's key resource and serves as a centralized mechanism for storing information on potential candidates. Information contained in LEAD has to be treated with the utmost level of confidentiality.
- Support the conducting of due diligence checks on potential candidates for senior leadership positions using open sources;
- Collect data on leadership trends in the field;
- Prepare mission and country profiles with background documentation for upcoming vacancies and/or change of mandate and present highlights to the Section Chief or Programme Officer
- Monitor the leadership landscape within the UN and within regional organizations and member states with a view of providing updated information brief to the Section;
- Conduct research and perform other duties as required by the Programme Officers.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme the applicant must:
(a)be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b)be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
(c)have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
•Be computer literate in standard software applications including Microsoft Office suite (Excel and PowerPoint in particular);
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. However, past exposure to operating in multicultural environments would be an asset.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
